Twine is the thing which can tell you when your laundry is done or when there is flood in basement when you are on vacation and similar other activities.
Twine is an interesting device with wifi module, temp and vibration sensors, an expansion connector for other sensors, on board mini USB for charging. This device connects to "Spool" web app through its wifi (created specifically by twine team). In this web app you can create rules in plain English language. These rules can trigger messages/twines.
So in nutshell, Spool web app reads sensors data through wifi from harware device - twine and then according to rules defined in its database by you sends you sms /tweet etc. to notify that particular condition is met/triggered.
